Transport Workers Union Update

The meeting with John Samuelson, president of the TWU, was very informative. A final decision will have to be approved by a majority of our membership. We would be considered a local that is tied to the TWU with a service agreement. They would supply us with the following:

  • Full access to TWU's labor attorneys
  • Negotiators with the assistance of active dog handlers to negotiate a contract
  • Contract negotiation training
  • Leadership training to include future elected leadership

DUES would be 2X your hourly rates which means if you make $26 per hour your dues would be $52 a month.

This is a lot more than we had planned on charging and it would also affect our numerous part time handlers. As I stated in the beginning, this would have to be voted on by the membership.

Thank You for Your Time

Bill Beaury

Yes, you're right, it is alot more! Interesting too that you drop this on June 5 when most of the ballots have already been mailed back.

That being said, I think it's most important that you guys weigh in on this since it mostly effects you.

Are these services that you guys need or are you confident doing this without TWU? Do you need contract and leadership training? Do you have your own lawyers or do you need their lawyers?

I think an honest reply would better let everyone know whether or not we want to take on the extra dues.

    1. I like to think it effects everyone. We'll have access to resources at all of TWUs local offices. That means if you have an issue in Chicago that needs to be escalated to a labor lawyer, you'd be assisted by one in their local Chicago office.

I'm confident in our ability to negotiate with MSA. I'm also confident that Glen's plan is to refuse everything we propose and claim it's in good faith. MSA has already attempted this in the lawsuit settlement meetings.

We have an excellent contract attorney already and Bill has many years experience on the contract negotiation committee with the NYPD. TWU would give handlers all over the country a support staff if they needed it. Not everyone who is elected in the future will have negotiating experience. TWU is willing to provide that.

The dues cover everything a standard union needs. TWU said they would include rent and salaries for staff. Seeing as those are expenses we don't have, we had discussed proposing a lower amount. I don't think anyone in the membership would be against paying less.

TWU is definitely an explorable option but not a necessity. I'm open to discussing it more with everyone after the election. A debate about it before we even have a union elected seems like misplaced energy but that's just me.

Thanks for the constructive comments Chris.

  2. Just can't swallow this TWU thing at all! Sounds like you guys bit off way more than you could chew, and ya are trying to find someone anyone to help ya. Way to late in the game for That! $52 a month, that's two hours of pay. And since most of us are "part time" employees, that's two of our thirty-six hours gone.

I must say this, THIS WHOLE THING WAS NOT THOUGHT OUT! IT WAS MORE OR LESS THROWN TOGETHER AND FORCED ON EVERY HANDLER OUTSIDE OF NYC! AND NOW THAT SOMEONE NOTICED THAT THE UFK9 WAS TOO MUCH OF A GRASSROOTS ATTEMPT, THEY ARE TRYING TO GET HELP!

People lives and family futures are in the balance and for such a last minute grasp for help from the TWU. NOT GOOD!

And to blindly go along with these poor decisions at the last MINTUE is wrong!

Can anyone answer why the anonymous option is not working? I was told because people were posting pictures and fighting between handlers. At this point, it appears that it's possibly because someone doesn't really want to hear the truth from the body.

And the people posting under the anonymous being used to protect handlers from retaliation from MSA, now seems like a way to protect the union from the body.

    1. Robert I believe we had this conversation. We were approached by the TWU we met with their president and we reported the results back to you. If you read my post I mentioned twice that the decision to join with the TWU would be up to the membership.
We have stopped the anonymous option because a lot of NON MSA HANDLERS have been posting very disparaging remarks and have twisted every word that we have sent out to you. We are here to help you and your partner and advise you of your options as things go forward, as i have told you in our conversation this union was started by handlers for handlers.

  3. Well it appears that the anonymous option is working. Just not for some.

  4. its Obvious that some people are just writing comments to go against anything that the union has to say. If you read bills letter it says that this would have to be voted on by the unions members . It’s an avenue that can be explored . An avenue that the union brings is more that you will get without it. I can’t believe that guys are complaining about 50 dollars a month. You are losing way more than that in stipend and training money now. WAKE UP. Everyone agrees that we all enjoy the job and are happy we are working. But at what expense do you say I deserve to be treated better and we need a voice to represent us or we will never get treated fairly .

  5. Why was that other comment removed? The one about $52 dues and if we had to pay $20 more to the UFK9.

  6. Why is this "Your comment will be visible after approval." Thing showing up? This REALLY looks bad guys!

    THIS IS CENSORSHIP!

Let people post to see if this is something we ALL want.

  7. Why would MSA K9 HANDLERS, want a Transporters Union? This shows me that y’all lack knowledge and the how to when it comes to this kind of shit. You want to hang us handlers out to dry, and leave us to the mercy of some bullshit Union cause you’re lost in the sauce? but don’t wanna lose cause you know y’all will look like a bunch of assholes! I think your Union is a horrible idea, and I think that 95% of y’alls motives behind this are selfish. You’re trying to make a point that is t there, quit being shitbags and work for a living. MSA starts its handlers out at $26 hourly, I promise you I worked my ass off for the first 3 years after getting out of the Marines, and never saw $26 an
hour. Try being grateful for what you have, and stop with this Union rhetoric it’s all completely farce.

  8. Hey, Tom it would have been nice if you guys would have asked the whole country if they wanted it, before YOU decided for US! Cause what's gonna happen now is, NYC problems are gonna be everywhere. And Tom, don't assume YOU know what I'm thinking! Thanks, Bob

    1. Again, that's what the election is for. The NLRB is asking the entire country if they want to be represented. If you don't want to be represented, vote no.

Are you paid for training at home? Are you compensated for at home care of your K9? Does your stipend cover all your expenses? I didn't realize these were just NYC problems.

  10. CENSORSHIP!

When the "anonymous" tag worked for the union it was ok. Now that more people are posting concerns, "anonymous" is bad. Which is it, Tom?

I was told it was due to pictures and guys fighting! If it's a comment that has something to say, either good or bad it SHOULD BE POSTED!

And by YOU, again deciding what good for us to see and what's not is CENSORSHIP!

I HAD A JOB BEFORE MSA, AND I WILL HAVE ONE AFTER, IF NEED BE!

Maybe if your so upset with MSA, you should try and find somewhere else to work, Tom.

Or could it be, maybe we have it better then we realize. It's an easy job, could we have better conditions? Sure, but for the most part, it's easy. Prior to taking this job, WE ALL knew that taking care of a dog was a part of this, no one hid that. Is $400, enough? NO. I was told that if MSA upped the stipend to $600 And gave a $2 raise across the board, that we should take it!

So now it's possible that we will have to pay dues for something we could have got for free! But we will never know, will we?

I have never been rude to anyone outbid blog! I have asked questions, some have been addressed and some not. I have addressed false statements made by one of my "fellow Chicago handlers". False statements that called out a person by their name. And that "fellow Chicago handler", didn't even have the courage to sign their name! You know who does that, a piss poor employee! One who probably can't work at certain posts, comes in late and leaves early, doesn't take care of their canine partner as they should i.e. overweight, dirty and nasty dogs! That's who makes posts like That!

    Why wasn't that post "approved"?

This appears to have been started with the intention of having everyone's best interest in mind, but it has went way way out of that now. It's to the point of guys being "censored" for attempting to have their voices heard!

    LET THEM SPEAK! Bob

  11. To be honest, I was leaning towards unionizing when all of this began. However that changed when I saw that you refused teaming with LEOSU when they offered. The benefit of teaming up clearly outweighed the negative in vote splitting (which ultimately cost unionization the first time around) and overall dues cost savings along with the one year waiver. However NOW you endorse doing virtually the same exact thing with TWU that you could have done with LEOSU, but now at a much higher cost, AND less the benefit of the 1 year dues waiver!! Lets just say I am glad I listened to my gut on this one and voted the way I did! Its starting to look like a 3 ring circus over there that has already cost us money before even getting started by not taking the LEOSU offer! A circus that is ultimately going to have a VERY HIGH ticket price if it wins out!
